Who are the top New Jersey Devils of all time? Here is our top 10 countdown:
10. Bobby Holik: known for his hard-nosed two-way play, Holik was a fan favorite on the “Crash Line” for many years, eventually developing a nice offensive touch (five 50-point seasons in 11 years with the Devils) as part of two Stanley Cup championships.
9. Scott Gomez: the center of the “EGG Line” alongside Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta, Gomez started off his NHL career with the Devils by winning the Calder Trophy as top rookie and went on to tally 484 points across eight seasons with the team, including a pair of Stanley Cup titles.
8. Zach Parise: spending the first seven years of his NHL career with the Devils (and eventually becoming team captain), Parise is one of the most prolific scorers in team history with five 30-goal seasons, including a career-high 45 goals in 2008-2009.
7. Kirk Muller: one of the team’s first stars (drafted second overall in 1984) and a longtime captain, Muller notched five consecutive 70-point seasons in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including a then franchise-record 94 points in 1987-1988.
6. John MacLean: selected sixth overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the Devils, MacLean spent the first 14 years of his NHL career with New Jersey and had three consecutive 40-goal seasons in his prime; he was part of the team’s first championship run and retired as the franchise’s all-time leading career scorer (since surpassed by Elias).
5. Ken Daneyko: the longest-tenured player in franchise history (1,283 regular season games), Daneyko spent his entire career in New Jersey as a tough-nosed stay-at-home defenseman and won three Stanley Cups with the team.
4. Patrik Elias: the Devils’ record-holder for both single-season and career points, Elias spent his entire 20-year career with New Jersey and won two Stanley Cups; he is also second all-time among Czech-born players in career NHL points (behind one-time Devil Jaromir Jagr).
3. Scott Niedermayer: a smooth-skating defenseman who spent the first 13 years of his career in New Jersey and won three Stanley Cups as a Devil, Niedermayer slowly emerged from Scott Stevens’ shadow to become one of the league’s best blueliners, highlighted by winning the Norris Trophy in 2003-2004.
2. Scott Stevens: acquired in 1991 as compensation for Brendan Shanahan, Stevens was an intimidating presence on the blueline for New Jersey – the team’s longtime captain, he finished top-10 for the Norris Trophy 10x in 13 years with the team and led the Devils to three Stanley Cups, in the process earning Conn Smythe honors in 1999-2000.
1. Martin Brodeur: the NHL’s all-time leader in goalie starts, wins, and shutouts, Brodeur was the epitome of consistency and excellence as the face of the Devils for nearly two decades, winning four Vezina and five Jennings Trophies and guiding the team to three Stanley Cup titles.
