Who are the top Philadelphia Phillies of all time? Here is our top 10 countdown:
10. Bobby Abreu: a steady, yet underrated performer during his eight-and-a-half seasons in Philadelphia, Abreu hit .300+ overall with the team and scored 100+ runs 6x while driving in 100+ runs 5x, but was only an All-Star twice with one Gold Glove and Silver Slugger apiece.
9. Chase Utley: one of the game’s elite second basemen during his prime with the Phillies, Utley made six All-Star Games and won four Silver Sluggers during a dozen plus years with the team, highlighted by winning the World Series in 2008.
8. Dick Allen: after winning NL Rookie of the Year and having one of the best rookie seasons ever in 1964, Allen went on to earn three All-Star selections and finish top-10 for MVP 2x with Philadelphia during a relatively offensively-depressed era.
7. Jimmy Rollins: the 2007 NL MVP, Rollins is not only the franchise career leader in hits, but a 3x All-Star and 4x Gold Glover during his 15 years with the Phillies, which included a World Series title in 2008.
6. Chuck Klein: the 1933 NL Triple Crown winner (yet only second for NL MVP that year), Klein also won MVP in 1932 and led the league in home runs 4x, runs scored 3x, and runs batted in 2x across nearly 15 seasons in a Philadelphia uniform.
5. Grover Cleveland Alexander: spending eight seasons with the Phillies primarily in the 1910s, Alexander was arguably the best hurler in the NL during that span – he led the league in innings pitched 6x, wins 5x, strikeouts 5x, and ERA 3x, in the process winning the Pitching Triple Crown three years in a row with 30+ wins.
4. Richie Ashburn: the epitome of a professional hitter, Ashburn batted .308 for his career and won two batting titles across a dozen years in Philadelphia, earning four All-Star selections in the process.
3. Robin Roberts: a workhorse during the 1950s who spent his first 14 seasons in Philadelphia, Roberts racked up six consecutive 20-win seasons (leading the league in innings pitched for five straight years and wins for four straight years) en route to seven All-Star selections and four top-10 MVP finishes in a row and 234 wins in a Phillies uniform.
2. Steve Carlton: one of only four players in MLB history with 4,000+ career strikeouts, Carlton is the winningest pitcher in Phillies history and a 7x All-Star, 5x 20-game winner, 4x Cy Young winner, and 1x World Series champion with the team, highlighted by his incredible 1972 season.
1. Mike Schmidt: the prototype third basemen, Schmidt was a virtuoso with both the bat (8x home run king with 548 career home runs) and the glove (10 Gold Gloves) en route to 12 All-Star selections, three MVP titles, and a World Series championship while setting a slew of franchise offensive records during his Hall of Fame career.
