Who are the top Pittsburgh Steelers of all time? Here is our top 10 countdown:
10. Jerome Bettis: second only to Franco Harris on the Steelers’ all-time rushing list, Bettis had six straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons with Pittsburgh (8x overall) and is currently eighth all-time on the NFL’s career rushing list.
9. Rod Woodson: a ballhawking defensive back with 71 career interceptions (third all-time in NFL history), 32 fumble recoveries, and 12 interception return touchdowns (the latter two are both NFL records), Woodson earned seven Pro Bowl and five All-Pro selections with the Steelers (11x and 6x overall, respectively), and was named 1993 Defensive Player of the Year.
8. Mel Blount: the namesake of the so-called “Mel Blount Rule”, Blount was a physical cornerback on the four Super Bowl-winning teams of the 1970s who picked off 57 career passes and was a 5x Pro Bowler, 2x All-Pro, and the 1975 Defensive Player of the Year.
7. Jack Ham: an 8x Pro Bowl and 6x All-Pro selection, Ham played on all four 1970s championship teams and holds the NFL record for linebackers with 53 career takeaways (32 interceptions and 21 fumble recoveries).
6. Mike Webster: arguably the greatest center of his day, Webster anchored the Pittsburgh offensive line for all four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s, earning nine Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pro selections in the process.
5. Terry Bradshaw: one of the NFL’s greatest winners, Bradshaw guided the Steelers to four Super Bowl titles during the 1970s while also winning a regular season MVP award and two Super Bowl MVPs in the process.
4. Franco Harris: as Pittsburgh’s all-time leading rusher, Harris was a 9x Pro Bowler and had eight 1,000-yard rushing seasons; moreover, he still holds the record for most career rushing yards in the Super Bowl.
3. Troy Polamalu: perhaps the best strong safety of his era, Polamalu was an 8x Pro Bowler and 4x All-Pro who also took home 2010 Defensive Player of the Year honors.
2. Jack Lambert: the tough middle linebacker for the “Steel Curtain”, Lambert played on four Super Bowl-winning teams and racked up nine straight Pro Bowl nods to go with six All-Pro selections and 1976 Defensive Player of the Year honors.
1. Joe Greene: one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, Greene was an integral part of the four 1970s championship teams – not only was he a 10x Pro Bowler and 4x All-Pro, but he was also twice named Defensive Player of the Year.
