H2H 149: Scott Rolen vs. Ron Santo – Who was Better?

Note: Updated for Scott Rolen’s 2023 Hall of Fame selection.

In 2012, longtime Chicago Cubs star (and later broadcaster) Ron Santo was finally elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the newly formed Golden Era Committee after never coming close during his 15 years on the regular writers’ ballot, a long overdue recognition for a third baseman who was equally adept with both the bat and the glove.  Fast forward a decade or so, and another all-around great third baseman in Scott Rolen faced a similar uphill climb since first becoming eligible in 2018, finally earning his induction in 2023. A closer look at their respective careers shows some striking similarities between the accomplishments of Santo and Rolen, thus prompting an interesting question and comparison:

Who was better – Scott Rolen or Ron Santo?

H2H 105: Wade Boggs vs. George Brett – Who was Better?

While Mike Schmidt was the dominant third baseman in the NL during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s (and arguably the best at the position in all of baseball), the AL also had its share of elite players at the hot corner during this time, chief among them Wade Boggs and George Brett.  Even though their careers overlapped for more than a decade and both are members of the rarified 3,000-career hit club, the two were very different types of players – Boggs the ultimate hit machine and Brett more of an all-around hitter.  Nevertheless, as two of the greatest third basemen in MLB history, the question that thus arises is:

Who was better – Wade Boggs or George Brett?

H2H 16: Adrian Beltre vs. Chipper Jones – Who was Better?

As of the 2019 Baseball Hall of Fame class, third base has the dubious distinction of having the fewest inductees in Cooperstown by any fielding position (17), which speaks to the degree of difficulty required to play the “hot corner” and to excel both offensively and defensively there over a sustained period of time.  Luckily for baseball fans of my generation, we had the fortune of witnessing two of the greatest third basemen ever in Adrian Beltre and Chipper Jones. While one was a bit of a baseball nomad (Beltre) and the other a face of a franchise for nearly 20 years (Jones), both were without a doubt among the best players of their generation and at times, often underrated and under-appreciated for their greatness.  2018 was a milestone year for the two, as it marked Beltre’s retirement from baseball and Chipper’s induction into the Hall of Fame; with this era of third basemen from the 1990s coming to an end and a new generation emerging that includes stars such as Jose Ramirez, Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, and Kris Bryant, we should take a moment to pause, reflect, and ask:

Who was better – Adrian Beltre or Chipper Jones?
