In the modern NFL, having a strong pass-catching tight end is no longer a luxury, but rather a necessity for an effective offense.  In fact, in some cases, the tight end may actually be one of the team’s top receivers; at certain points in their careers, such was the case for Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers and Greg Olsen of the Carolina Panthers.  During the 2000s and 2010s, each tight end was the quarterback’s best friend in his prime and had a long career highlighted by a peak in which he was one of the league’s elite tight ends, thus prompting the question:

H2H 148: Antonio Gates vs. Jason Witten – Who was Better?

With the evolution of the passing game in football, the tight end position has likewise undergone a revolution from primarily an extra blocker to a versatile pass-catching weapon.  In particular, the 21st century NFL has not only seen all-world tight ends like Tony Gonzalez and Rob Gronkowski (arguably two of the best tight ends ever), but also dominant forces like Antonio Gates and Jason Witten – the former is the most prolific scorer in league history at the position, while the latter is the all-time iron man among tight ends and also once held the single-season tight ends receptions record.  Both longtime legends announced their retirement in recent years and are most assuredly Hall of Famers, thus bringing up the debate:

H2H 36: Tony Gonzalez vs. Rob Gronkowski – Who was Better?

Throughout football history, the role of the tight end has evolved from a lumbering extra blocker on the offensive line to a dynamic, multi-faceted weapon with the ability to create mismatches on defense and dominate as a pass-catcher in the red zone while also contributing to the running game.  From the early days of tight ends like Mike Ditka and John Mackey to Ozzie Newsome and Shannon Sharpe, football fans have been witnesses to a tight end revolution over the past couple of decades, with two notable names in Tony Gonzalez and Rob Gronkowski at the vanguard of the “new age” tight end.  With Gronkowski’s recent retirement, a natural debate arises between Gonzalez’s long-term brilliance and Gronkowski’s epic zenith:
