H2H 141: Shane Doan vs. Ryan Smyth – Who was Better?

Every sports team’s fan base has its share of franchise favorites – though these may not necessarily be the best players in the team’s history (they can be), they have usually been around with the team through thick and thin and are both leaders and class acts.  For the Arizona Coyotes and the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL, perhaps the most popular players in (recent) franchise history are Shane Doan and Ryan Smyth, respectively – outstanding hockey players in their own right, they each led their respective teams through rather bleak periods with class and dignity, thus forever earning a place in the hearts of the fans; given their relatively parallel careers, it is only natural to compare the pair and ask:

Who was better – Shane Doan or Ryan Smyth?

H2H 137: Doug Gilmour vs. Joe Nieuwendyk – Who was Better?

The 2011 Hockey Hall of Fame class featured four highly-decorated NHL players: goalie Ed Belfour, defenseman Mark Howe, and centers Doug Gilmour and Joe Nieuwendyk.  Among the illustrious foursome, perhaps it is only fitting that Gilmour and Nieuwendyk were inducted together – each was an elite center in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, scored over 1,000 career points, served as a team captain, and the duo even played on the same team and won a Stanley Cup together.  Given the similarities, let us look at these parallel Hall of Fame careers and examine the question:

Who was better – Doug Gilmour or Joe Nieuwendyk?

H2H 133: Chris Chelios vs. Larry Robinson – Who was Better?

To play for two decades or more in the NHL is an incredible accomplishment; to do so at an extremely high level is the stuff of legends.  Throughout the league’s history, two legendary defensemen who exemplify this rare combination of longevity and excellence are Chris Chelios and Larry Robinson – the former was a hard-nosed defender who set both regular season and playoff records for games played, while the latter was blessed with prototypical size and has the highest career +/- rating ever as part of the defensive anchor of the legendary Montreal Canadiens dynasty of the 1970s.  Both eventually skated their way into the Hockey Hall of Fame and are among the greatest blueliners in league history, thus evoking the comparison:

Who was better – Chris Chelios or Larry Robinson?

H2H 128: Patrik Elias vs. Markus Naslund – Who was Better?

Though the late 1990s and early 2000s were known for being a defensive-minded era in the NHL (in contrast to the wide-open, high-scoring 1980s), it nevertheless still produced its share of elite offensive players.  On opposite ends of North America, two European-born stars in Patrik Elias and Markus Naslund were franchise players for the New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks, respectively, and each retired as the all-time franchise leader in career points (though Naslund has since been surpassed by the Sedin twins).  Looking back on these two underrated and unassuming stars of the early 21st century, let us compare their careers and ask:

Who was better – Patrik Elias or Markus Naslund?

H2H 123: Mark Recchi vs. Luc Robitaille – Who was Better?

Any hockey player who can play two decades in the NHL and tally over 500 career goals and 1,300 career points is a legend in his own right; yet while such was the case with Mark Recchi and Luc Robitaille, both wingers were perpetually underrated throughout their Hall of Fame careers, overshadowed by other legends and never quite considered among the very upper-echelon players in the league at any given point.  However, there is something to be said for consistent, if understated excellence, so let us take a moment to appreciate the duo and at the same time, ponder the question:

Who was better – Mark Recchi or Luc Robitaille?
